Measuring Website Engagement from Email Campaigns

Connect email links to destination-site sessions with first-party events, explicit consent options, and bounded active-time rules.

Updated October 23, 2026 · Definitions and caveats are stated in the text.

Instrument the destination, not just the email

A tracked email link can record a redirect request, but it cannot measure what happens after the browser reaches the destination. To measure page views, scroll milestones, conversions, or bounded active engagement, install an analytics snippet on the site you control and document which events it sends.

Keep the campaign tag on a non-sensitive identifier. Strip query strings from stored paths because URLs can carry email addresses, reset tokens, search terms, or other private information. The landing-page event and the email click are related measurements, not interchangeable events.

Define engagement before reporting it

Time-on-page should not be the difference between page load and tab close. An idle or background tab is not evidence of reading. A bounded heartbeat can add active time only while the page is visible and the visitor has interacted recently, with server-side caps on each interval.

Engaged-session rules are product definitions, not universal truths. This tracker documents a default rule—active time at or above the configured threshold, enough page views, or a conversion—and allows the project owner to configure the threshold. State the rule and version when comparing periods.

  • Record the event types you actually use, not every possible browser interaction.
  • Treat conversions as observed only when the destination sends the event.
  • Keep automated traffic separate where classification supports it; do not claim perfect detection.

Make the privacy choice explicit

The snippet is first-party and does not use a cross-site cookie or fingerprint. A customer can set data-consent="required" and have their own consent-management platform call the provided consent hook. In that mode, the script does not send beacons or persist a session reference before consent is granted.

The product supplies an integration point, not legal advice or a consent-management platform. The site owner must decide which disclosures, legal basis, and consent behavior apply to their audience and jurisdictions. The owner's confirmation is not proof that visitors consented.

Questions

Does an email click automatically create a website session?

No. The destination must be instrumented, and the session event is recorded only when the destination snippet sends an accepted batch.

Does the tracker count an open tab as reading time?

No. Active time uses bounded heartbeats while the page is visible and recently active. A background or idle tab contributes no heartbeat time.
